A 50 YEAR-LONG ITALIAN HISTORY OF INNOVATION
Family values permeate our work and our history that begins in Italy, more than 50 years ago, by the passion of a man for animal nutrition. It was 1965 when Mr. Francesco Russo founded the Russo Mangimi company specialized in animal nutrition. In that company, Mr. Russo raised his children and passed on his values as the engine power of animal wellness and thus the individual. In the meantime the family grew and with it also the company, until in 1999 Dr. Angelo Russo, son of the owner Francesco, driven by a passion for animals from affection decided to operate in the pet food category with a new perspective, setting itself the ambitious goal to develop foods that are the result of scientific studies centered on the pet and his well-being.
Dr. Russo began an ambitious route that drove him to start a collaboration with Farmina, an English company specializing in research and formulating food for dogs and cats, which brought skills, trademarks, and know-how. In a short time, the positive customer response allowed the company to invest in technological research and development, and in setting up partnerships with leading independent research institutes as the chair of Nutrition and Animal Nutrition of the University of Naples Federico II. He also constituted Farmina Vet Research: a team of veterinarians and specialists in a nutritional formulation that allowed a constant and systematic study of the best foods for the nature of pets, thanks to the feedback that came from dozens of veterinarians with whom Farmina worked in long term cooperative relationships.

TECHNOLOGY
TWIN-SCREW
The twin-screw extruder is mainly adopted in the field of human food production (such as pasta, cookies, etc.), ensures better gelatinization of starch, with an increase in terms of mixing and baking of 20-25% compared to single-screw systems. The final result is a lower denaturing of nutrients resulting in increased digestibility of our food.
VACUUM COATER
Integration of the lipids (fats) in the product is achieved using the Vacuum Coater system, ensuring better and homogeneous distribution throughout entire kibbles. This technology allows us to include also vitamins at lower temperatures preventing thermal stress and obtaining a longer duration of their effectiveness – Farmina’s concept of Long Life Vitamins.
PROTECTIVE ATMOSPHERE PACKAGING: Great attention is paid to the moment of packaging, using nitrogen, a volatile gas that dissipates once you open the bag but within the packaged product, replaces the oxygen avoiding fat oxidation and therefore rancidity. A technological solution also used in human foods and a technology that guarantees the preservation of nutrients over time, thanks to complete isolation of the kibbles from the outside world.

The quality control system is very important in the food industry as it ensures customers have the best product in terms of organoleptic quality, freshness, and integrity. Our quality control system monitors the entire production cycle. Starting from suppliers selection, passing through raw material and production cycle controls, we finish our strict monitoring on the finished product just before shipping and further controls.
Farmina invests heavily in continuous control of quality. Our team regularly checks all raw materials and, in the same way, each production batch is subject to in-depth analysis that can span up to 18 months.
According to a strict audit process, all raw materials come from certified suppliers. The production runs are all tracked, which allows Farmina to intervene promptly when it is necessary and reconstruct the history of each package of food. In addition, the NIR (Near InfraRed) analysis of the raw materials and finished products, allows complete real-time monitoring of both incoming raw materials and outgoing finished products. Our internal laboratory is also supported by outside laboratories for all aspects related to food safety according to a strict default analysis plan. In terms of controls, we pay special attention to all activities related to ensuring the absence of mycotoxins and aflatoxins.

In Farmina we have developed a working method that allows us to give our pets a freshly cooked attractive product: the Just in Time. Our food is produced only after being ordered from our partners this means that we serve our 4 legged friends with products that are always fresh and at the best of their nutritional and organoleptic qualities. This process allows us to deliver from our resellers a food, on average, only 4 days old. No deposit, no stock thanks to an efficient working method that allows us to offer high-quality products.
The selection of raw materials is of paramount importance to obtain a product whose characteristics provide the optimum nutritional intake and biological value for the welfare of pets. In Farmina, we use only the best products of our partners to produce food nutritionally able to meet at best the nutritional needs of dogs and cats.

PROTEINS
Chicken, lamb, and wild boar meat, as well as eggs, come from certified farms and carefully selected for their high-quality standards.
The chicken meat used in Farmina products comes from Italian chicken reared in open (with GMO-Free diet) fresh from slaughter, without feathers and poor quality other parts. This helps in making this raw material food with a high content in high biological value protein, with a 95% rate of digestibility.
Grass Feb Lamb meat derives from New Zealand’s extensive production and is selected for its higher content in essential fatty acids and linoleic acid with anticancer action, as well as having a good ratio of lean and fat mass than other red meats.
Farmina selects wild boar meat directly from Tuscany and Umbria semi-wild herds. This is a particularly valuable type of red meat, with high biological value and not commonly used as raw materials in dog and cat nutrition.
Eggs come from Italian herds, they are considered the protein source of reference for biological value and digestibility. They are transported fresh to the shelling plants and here transformed into powder through a process of dehydration for atomization, which guarantees the preservation of the nutrients of this food.
Fish species included in Farmina formulas are cod and herring, both from sea fishing and not for breeding, which guarantees the high quality of raw materials and low chloride content.
In order to ensure the correct contributions in essential amino acids, Farmina shall integrate some diets with taurine, methionine, lysine, and cystine. The addition of these amino acids helps to increase the biological value of food proteins of Farmina products to further meet the specific needs of different species and categories of animals.
FATS
In companion carnivores, fats represent an important energy source, as well as an essential fatty acid source and a decisive factor of palatability.
Farmina selects as fats sources for its food mainly chicken fat and fish oil. Within vegetable oils, linseed oil is rich in linoleic acid, essential fatty acid both for dogs and cats.
Chicken fat, again from Italian suppliers, has a higher value of polyunsaturated fatty acids than bovine or swine ones and it is also palatable for animals.
Herring Fish oil, coming from Scandinavia, is the animal fat richer in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, very useful for their anti-inflammatory action. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (the so-called PUFAs) play an important role in skin and hair wellbeing and have anti-aging effects.
CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are another important source of Energy energy for dogs and cats. In particular, carbohydrates as provide readily available Energyenergy.
We don’t use corn but only selected the first choice GMO-Free spelt, oats, potato, and rice; the innovative technology we use and the accurate controls we take over raw materials guarantee an excellent digestibility.
The treatment with a twin-screw extruder allows better mixing of the product and a better distribution of the heat, ensuring higher digestibility.
The use of ancestral cereals, such as spelt and oats, guarantees a better modulation of energy availability during the day.
In foods and diets that require it, sometimes we also use potato and rice, because these carbohydrate sources guarantee a rapid energy boost for the subject.
FIBRES
In a balanced food, the correct intake of fiber plays an important role in the regulation of intestinal transit of food ingested and influences the absorption of several nutrients.
Farmina products use as fiber sources beet pulp, pea fiber, pure cellulose, and dehydrated alfalfa.
The beetroot pulp we use is Italian and promotes regular bowel movements and the formation of good stool consistency.
Pure cellulose, used in some diet formulas, is the main source of insoluble fiber. It is fundamental for intestinal peristalsis and it is especially indicated in treatments that require a reduction of caloric intake.
Pea fiber, high in soluble fiber, creates a jelly mass in the digestive tract that slows the intestinal transit and promotes the absorption of micronutrients.
Dehydrated alfalfa is a good source of micronutrients such as carotens and calcium.
The presence in the ingredients of some peculiar pre-biotic such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) plays a benefic action on the bowel by competitive exclusion of pathogenic bacteria and by selective sequester and elimination of any toxin.
Psyllium seeds are very rich in soluble fiber and are ideal in slowing food transit along the digestive tube, meanwhile, they promote some nutrients absorption and good stool consistency.
Farmina pays particular attention to the fiber mix to use in each formula, always taking into account the physiological and/or pathological condition of the animal or specific features of species or breed that most predispose a subject to certain pathologic conditions.
VITAMINS
Vitamins are essential for proper nutrition because they are the most important driver of biochemical reactions in the body.
Vitamin deficiencies can in some cases present specific and obvious symptoms, in others more subtly or with a state of the general weakening of the subject. It is thus mandatory to guarantee the daily intake of appropriate amounts to grant a smooth operation of all vital functions. Vegetal natural extracts of grape seed and green tea boost the antioxidant action.
Farmina products’ vitamin supplementation is also complete and balanced according to the physiological and developmental stage of the animal and of any pathology to treat which a specific diet has been developed.

MINERALS

NUTRACEUTICALS AND FUNCTIONAL COMPOUNDS
Farmina uses both nutraceuticals (compounds with medicinal properties already present or extract by food) and functional compounds (ingredients with specific beneficial properties besides nutritional effects) in its food formulas.
One of the nutraceuticals we use is glucosamine, extracted by crustaceans, and chondroitin sulfate, extracted BY cartilaginous fish, both useful in promoting growth and repair of cartilage tissue.
Several functional compounds are furthermore used in several combinations both in mantainence food and in clinical nutrition diets. Specifically, we use several fruit extracts like apple, rich in provitamin A, Vitamins B1, B2, B6, E, C, niacin, folic acid, flavonoids, and carotenoids; pomegranate is a source of vitamins of B group, vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidant polyphenols; blueberry and currant are rich in vitamin A and C, pectins, tannins, mirtillin and other anthocyanins (important protectors of retinoic vases); orange, source of B complex vitamins and vitamin C, zinc, potassium, calcium and flavonoids, and grapeseed which, rich in antioxidant complexes, help in reducing systemic hypertension.
In Farmina foods is possible to find also spinach, rich in vitamin C, carotenoids, folic acid, and lutein (essential in retinal protection) and carrot, rich in vitamin A, and several medicinal plants such as rosemary, rich in natural antioxidants; aloe vera, with anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, bacteriostatic and with skin repair action, turmeric, with important skin healing and antioxidant effects and green tea, rich in antioxidants polyphenols.

ANIMAL FATS
Fats are fundamental compounds of the natural diet of carnivores and are easily assimilated because they come from animal sources, not from plants or vegetables.
Scientific studies have shown that animal fats are more quickly assimilated and absorbed by carnivores, in particular, the use of fish oil allows to guarantee the proper intake of essential fatty acids in addition to good palatability of the product.
In the N&D range, the fat content is given by the only presence of animal fatty acids from chicken fat and fish oil, characterized by a greater contribution to EPA, DHA, and the omega-3 series fatty acids.

Preservatives and antioxidants particularly are compounds with the ability to delay, prevent, reduce or eliminate oxidative damage on food. Since antiquity, mankind added compounds with preservative power to food, especially adding spices was one of the few effective methods to preserve food and prevent damage, mostly in warmer areas.
Some of the nutrients of food can easily run into oxidation: lipids, generally, have a greater tendency to lose electrons and self-oxidize leading to an alteration of color, flavor, texture, quality, genuineness, and safety of food. For example, oxidation may alter Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) or fat-soluble vitamins causing major changes in food quality, while the formation of volatile odoriferous compounds and hydroxy acids can affect aroma and flavor.
Dietary antioxidants preserve the food and have also a benefic effect on animals that eat them: on a body level antioxidants can reduce damages caused by free radicals and, in general, by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in addition they counteract cellular aging, reducing the risk of chronic and degenerative diseases onset, often linked to oxidative stress.
Our aim of naturalness is therefore accomplished through the replacement of classical artificial antioxidants with only natural antioxidants. Artificial preservatives like BHA and BHT could have negative effects on the health of our animals, even though some of them could be seen only on a long-term period and as a result of accumulation.
Synthetic antioxidants have been developed starting in 1940 in order to stabilize gats and oils, preventing rancidity. Generally, they have better antioxidant action and are more readily bioavailable than natural antioxidants.
TBHQ, BHA, BHT are artificial antioxidants mainly used in food and their effect on health is still controversial. Several studies showed the existence of a correlation between the intake of such compounds and some alterations of animal organs to which they are administered, especially if at high dosage.
Literature reports side effects like suppressive effects on leptin-dependent satiety circuits, chromosomal and spermatic abnormalities, interference with prostaglandin synthesis and immune response, induction of microsomal H2O2 formation, reduced contractility of smooth and cardiac muscle, and influence in lipid metabolism and in vitamin E levels, transient elevation of plasma lipids and cholesterol; promotion of gastric, bladder, thyroid, and lung carcinomas onset; induction of hyperplasia and gastric cytotoxicity and liver, thyroid, adrenal glands, and lungs hypertrophy.
These are the reasons why we decided to add to our formulas exclusively natural antioxidants, found in natural sources and including carotenoids, retinoids (Vitamin A), bioflavonoids (Citrin), polyphenols (hydroxytyrosol), tocopherols (Vitamin E), and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), added in all our range both during the storage of raw materials and in the finished product. Many vegetables are naturally rich in antioxidants, such as some cereals (oats), beetroots and potatoes, fruits like pomegranate and orange but mostly some berries (blueberry, currant) and green tea.
Natural antioxidants can be added to food in higher quantities than artificial ones, as safety limits are higher; this implies higher production costs for the company which uses them, however, justified by a higher healthiness.
Finally, as a further guarantee of perfect and ideal preservability, all Farmina Vet Life and Natural & Delicious range are packed in a protective atmosphere in order to further prevent fats oxidation and maintain flavor and freshness, keeping the product fresh as just baked. This technology is largely used also in the human food industry as nitrogen is a volatile gas naturally present we breathe daily.
