Dog goes through periods of moulting in spring and in autumn. The moulting is more intense in spring because of the thick winter coat. The time for moulting is influenced by the duration of daylight and by temperature and can last between six and seven weeks. Young dogs finish moulting more quickly than older dogs.
You can help your dog with moulting in several ways. A suitable diet equally has an influence on healthy skin and hair.
Unsaturated fatty acids play an important role in producing a glossy and healthy coat. A lot of these are contained in feeding oils, which are an essential food supplement for dogs and cats during moulting time. Biotin and vitamin B also have a positive influence on skin and hair development. Special yeast products, as well as vitamin tablets and pastes, can add to an optimal food supply.
Regular combing and brushing are essential at this time of the year. It removes excess dead hair and makes the moulting time pass more quickly. Ideally, your animal is used to the procedure from an early age. Then the daily grooming poses no stress for owner and pet. Depending on the type of coat there are numerous brushes, combs, curry combs and other tools available.
The brushing and combing are best done outside. Dog hair in upholstery, carpets and in the car can easily be removed with the help of lint rollers or special brushes for removing animal hair.
