As with other young mammals, puppies should be fed exclusively breast milk during the first stages of their lives. Generally, this period will last between 4 to 6 weeks during their mother’s lactation period. After this time, their mother will start to wean them onto solid food. This occurs as their first teeth start to develop. Weaning in puppies needs to be a progressive process from an exclusively liquid diet to a solid diet.
To achieve gradual weaning, a puppy-specific kibble should be moistened with water or puppy milk formula. This will create a porridge that can be more easily ingested by the still-teething puppy. It is a step between milk and solid food. It will not only help the dog adapt to more solid food, but it will also better avoid gastrointestinal problems. It can be particularly useful when providing a diet for a prematurely weaned puppy.
